The legalising of gay marriage in December 2017 has brought changes to Family Law.

Previously, same sex couples were recognised as having the same rights as de-facto couples. Under the Family Law Act, de facto couples are entitled to the same property settlement and parenting order processes as married couples.

The fact that same sex couples can now marry means there are more options when it comes to entering and ending a relationship and resolving property settlement by way of a financial agreement.

Same sex couples may also now file for Divorce.
